1. Catalytic Oxidation:
At atomic level, silver possesses theability to absorb oxygen and acts as a catalytic agent in the process of oxidation. The oxygen atom (indigenous) absorbed on tne surface of silver ions in tne solution starts actively reacting with tne "outstanding" thiol groups(-SH) which cover tne surface of bacteria or viruses, removing Hydrogen atoms from them( forming e.g. water) and creation of bonds -S-S-type. Due to the blocking of tne existing electron transfer channels( embedded across the cell-membrane), thus hampering the breathing cycle of the bacteria. This leads to the atrophy of bacteria.
It must be explained here that oxidation must not be coordinated with the enrichment of the oxidised substance with oxygen. The existence of oxidation is the snatching away of electron from the substrate (usually two electrons are taken away simultaneously), which is accompanied by the breaking off of two protons (H+) and their transfer to an appropriate acceptor. The initiation of the normal redox reaction allows silver to react with literally all the negative charged particles brought intothe system the through the circulatory system of the organism or protein membranes and their subsequent de-activation. The genetic material of the bacterial cell is thus oxidised, thanks to the catalytic properties of silver and the production of active-oxygen.
